Limestone

Limestone is a type of sedimentary rock primarily composed of calcite and aragonite, both of which are forms of calcium carbonate CaCO3. It is formed when these minerals precipitate from lake or ocean water. It may also contain significant amounts of magnesium carbonate (dolomite) and also minor components that are usually present such as iron carbonate, pyrite, clay, quartz, and felspar. Most limestones are normally formed in clean, calm, warm, shallow marine environments, such as continental shelves or platforms, and smaller amounts were also formed in many different environments. It can also be formed in the accumulation of coral, fecal, shell, algal, and other organic debris. The fossils found in the limestone provide scientists with information about the ancient environments and evolution of life.

Limestone is a raw material that is used all over the world in a variety of applications, including agriculture, industrial material, and mostly in construction. It is extremely popular in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Bank, train stations, and other structures from that time were typically constructed of limestones. It was also a very popular building material in the Middle Ages in the areas where it was found because it is commonly found in easily accessible surface exposures plus it is hard and durable. It is likely the first widely used building material. Some of the old stone buildings in the world were constructed with limestone. Some of these are; Beer Quarry Caves, a popular man-made limestone underground complex in Southern England; Kingston, the Canadian City which was given the nickname Limestone City because of so many buildings were, continue to be,  constructed using limestone in Ontario, Canada. and; The Great Pyramid, the oldest and the largest of the pyramids in the Giza and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is made primarily with limestones.

Applications

Limestones can be used in several residential and commercial applications such as interior and exterior walls, interior and exterior flooring, facades, garden, swimming pools, road surfaces, pavements, kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces, claddings, and more.

Limestone is a popular choice among architects for both traditional and contemporary projects. It can also be used to complement other building materials and for other highly decorative applications.

Benefits

There are several main benefits of placing limestone material in your home:

Beauty & Versatility

Limestone is extremely versatile, it comes in a variety of different colors. Pure limestones are nearly white or off-white in color and they will go almost in anything. If this isn’t your color, there are other options. It is produced in many finishes which can make it cream, black, grey, beige, and many more. Limestone, in terms of shape, is easily shaped into blocks or bricks, making it even more versatile. The variety of stones available is breathtaking, and they can add a lot to any home. Because there are so many different colors to choose from, most homeowners will be able to find one that complements their existing style. And the stone can easily bring out color or blend into a home.

Durability

Limestone is the most natural choice for a stone that is durable and meant to last for generations. Because it is a strong, dense stone and has few pores, it will not scratch, freeze, or change in any way over time. Romans and Greeks used limestone to create statues and buildings, and many of those structures still stand today. It is also extremely weather-resistant, and while it will naturally corrode over time, the corrosion will be superficial and will not affect the structural integrity of the structure.

Value & Cost-Effective

Limestone is an excellent heat conductor. This means that the building’s interior will be much cooler. This is not only better for the environment by lowering electricity bills, but it is also much better for your wallet in the long run. It is often chosen over other materials because it is easier to transport and install and it’s more cost-effective, but will last for many years and will not need to be replaced. Potential buyers understand that limestone lasts a long time and are willing to pay more for a home that includes it. Its aesthetics also add appeal to the home, increasing its value.
