Travertine
Travertine is a type of limestone made from mineral deposits found in natural springs typically in springs, rivers, and lakes. It’s a sedimentary stone, that is formed by the fast precipitation of calcium carbonate called calcite. Other minerals combine with the calcite to form the swirls and movement that give travertine its distinct appearance. It often has a fibrous or concentric look and comes in white, tan, cream, and even rusty colors.
The name “travertine” is derived from Latin. It was named after the Roman city where it was quarried, now known as Tivoli, and its Latin name is lapis tiburtinus, which means Tibur stone. Although Italy and Turkey have traditionally been major travertine exporters, there is some domestic production, primarily represented by the large travertine deposits in Yellowstone National Park. Travertine is a beautiful natural stone that has been used for ages as a building material and is part of history and civilization. It can be found in everything from ancient monuments to modern structures such as the Colonnade of St. Peter’s Square in Rome which is made up of 284 columns of roman travertine quarried in Tivoli and designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini; the Roman Colosseum which was built with travertine also Michelangelo used it as the material for the external ribs of the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica; More modern structures have adopted the material as well like the Getty Center in Los Angeles, California, and Shell-Haus in Berlin, and also the Sears Tower in Chicago – now known as the Willis Tower.
