Marble
Marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone is subjected to metamorphic heat and pressure. It is largely composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. The swirls and veins of many colorful marble variants are mainly caused by mineral impurities such as clay, silt, sand, iron oxides, or chert that were originally present as grains or layers in the limestone.
Marble has been extensively used throughout history in various parts of the world including; The Taj Mahal, an ivory-white marble mausoleum in the Indian city of Agra; Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, a tall monument also made from marble; and The Washington Monument in the U.S which was made using three different marble types. Marble was also used to make sculptures like the famous Statue of David, a masterpiece of renaissance sculpture made by Michelangelo, as well as his Pieta for St Peter’s Basilica.
